Power Rankings: Week 3

09/18/2023
It was a sad week for Super League as founding member Christian Rowe left the league due to off the field issues, and multiple devastating injuries rock the league. In happier news, we welcome newcomer Jacob Casto to the league, who will look to get this franchise on a better track. In other news, Play Action Jackson and the Parma Pirates pick up their first wins of the season, while three teams fall to 0-2.

Tier 1: Gods

1. Zark's Sharks

The Sharks retain the number one spot after a solid week in the office. It may not be stated enough how much of an advantage rostering Justin Jefferson is, who despite not reaching the end zone this season, has been a solid foundation for the Sharks. The TD's will roll in soon, which should make Jefferson and the Sharks reach ungodly points totals. There is some bad news for the Sharks this week, as a few key injuries to David Montgomery and newcomer Saquon Barkley will challenge the Sharks depth, which was slightly diminished by the aforementioned Barkley acquisition. I still think Barkley raises the ceiling in the long run, but this is something to monitor. His team has some time to get healthy for the big week 6 showdown versus the Bud Ice Penguins.

2. Bud Ice Penguins

The Penguins got the job done and come out of week 2 with a perfect record. Bijan is looking like a complete slam dunk of a pick / trade, and I've begun to notice that there is an underrated aspect of this Penguins rebuild. The keepers are absolutely top shelf, with Mahomes, Bijan, and several keeper level options for the third spot. Being able to build a contender is one thing, but acquiring a core of this caliber will keep the Penguins in contention for years to come. The Penguins still have multiple trade chips and players that will become active in the coming weeks to add to this team. For those counting at home, that's 5 straight sentences on everything the Penguins have done right in the past year.

With all this talent and asset accumulation should come a guaranteed top half scoring team, but that is not what the Penguins were in week 2, which is why I cannot move them up. Noah has a great chance to move up in this ranking in the coming weeks though, with matchups versus Jack, Sam, and Zach looming all within the next 4 weeks. The injury to Nick Chubb may prove to greatly advantage the Penguins, as rival The SL Dynasty loses a major piece in what was looking like a true contender. Bud Ice is here, but I need the output to match the roster construction.

Tier 2: Playoff Hopefuls

3. Slatt's Slimes

Sam loses, and yet he moves up in this poll. Why?

Well, for starters, he is the top scoring team in the league so far, which is a HUGE feat for a franchise that didn't even exist a couple months ago, and he did it in week 2 without his best player. Not enough can be said about how Sam has navigated Super League so far. He's proving quickly to be a top executive in the league with savy trades and picks such as Tyreek Hill, and Sam LaPorta, respectively. The Slimes may have found an absolute stud in Swift, and once Ekeler and Cooper come back into the fold, this team is dangerous as hell. But that's only one side of the story. The blow to Chubb is a huge deal, and the Slimes look like the team to take over the role of playoff lock, which was looking like The SL Dynasty was quickly becoming. The Slimes could be a legitimate threat to the top tier teams if they continue this level of play and management.

4. Play Action Jackson

Well, what a week for Play Action Jackson's playoff chances. I can't think of a week that should encourage a single team more this early in the season. A huge win over PGH gets them the edge on the playoff tiebreaker for now, but this jump is also due to outside influences. Play Action Jackson is another team that will likely benefit from a weakened SL Dynasty, as the teams are rivals. The situation with Christian's team (now Jacob's team) is one that should also bolster their playoff chances. Add in a 40 point win in week 2, and you have the recipe for a positive season on the horizon. Mark Andrews needed to come up with something this week, and he did just that. Getting 13 from your tight end is huge, and will give you an advantage over almost every team every week. It looks like Dalvin Cook is not going to be a starting option going forward, which is mitigated by the fact that Brian Robinson looks like he could be a strong starting option. Through all the turbulence this week, PAJ comes out looking strong. Good job lads.

5. PGH Crooners

The PGH Crooners keep their spot despite putting up the second lowest score of the week, but there is still a lot to like with this team. Chase basically busted in back to back weeks, which sucks for the Crooners considering they gave up Bijan Robinson to get him. On the bright side, Addison looks like he will be a legit option going forward, and several bench options have emerged as starter candidates. I think this team needs to make some moves, and might need to make some draft pick moves when the pick window re-opens. This team will need to win next week vs WFT, and should look to make moves in order to beat Slatt's Slimes in week 4. With all the uncertainty that came with this week, I think 5 is a safe place to put the Crooners for now, although I do worry about the starting production ever reaching a level to compete this season.

6. The SL Dynasty

What a swing for the newly renamed SL Dynasty, who suffers probably the most devastating injury we will see this season. I began writing this article on Monday morning, and I slotted this team in the God tier. Did I jinx this team, and therefore my NFL team, by dooming Nick Chubb? I hope not. Nevertheless, the SL Dynasty will have to find other ways to proceed. Coming in at number 9 in the waiver order is not great for their chances of improving through free agency. Jack will have to rely on Justice Hill, AJ Dillon, and Khalil Herbert for the RB2 slot for the rest of the season, which for a ten team league is really not ideal. CMC is a big candidate to miss some games as well, which could really mess everything up for this team, which was once brimming with RB talent in the offseason. I think the core is enough to be a playoff contender for sure, but I think the rivalry matchups with PAJ and BIP complicate the season for the SL Dynasty. What should have been a playoff lock and a team to avoid in the postseason, turns into a team that will struggle to make the playoffs in my opinion. Chubb was that important to this team, so despite the strong showing in his absence, I think they must drop. This team has a small chance to be the 3 seed still, but things just got much trickier.

Tier 3: Wild Cards

7. Parma Pirates

I was way too low on the Pirates last week, as they come back and smack the rest of the league and win a huge game. This team flashed its ceiling in what proved to be the matchup of the week. Even given this giant win, it's hard to tell which Pirates will show up on a given week. I love the addition of youth to the squad, but this team is still clearly set on winning a title next year. They are truly a wild card, capable of outscoring any team in a week, and capable of being beaten by any team in the next. The depth appears to have improved as the Pirates continue shaping this roster, but I can't consider them a true playoff team until more wins are added on. Secondary rival Christian Rowe left the league, being replaced by Jacob Casto. It's currently unclear how this will affect this team's playoff chances.

8. UNFINISHED BIZ

Carter's team is so weird. It seems like this squad could be a contender to win on any given week, yet they start 0-2. They lose big to the Sharks, but that was expected. Both QBs are still highly questionable, and this team would be hard to pick starters for, because a lot of the flex / OP options are very similar in production. The one thing giving this team any edge is team owner Carter Tracey. He is the difference maker in what would otherwise be a completely irrelevant team. It's possible Carter snags a nice FA this week, makes a crazy trade, and all of a sudden goes on a run. It's also possible Carter drops a massive losing streak before punting the season. He's a wild card right now.

9. Jacob's Squad

Jacob is an unknown to most of the league, but he actually competed in the precursor to Super League, where he did win at least one title if my memory is correct. Jacob will certainly bring an edge that this franchise has been missing, and I expect him to make the first draft pick trades in this franchise's history eventually. Jacob is inheriting a lot of pros and cons with this team, with pros being that he gets many solid skill players, some decent building blocks, and he has all of his future picks. The cons are that he's coming in 0-2, didn't pick any of these guys, has no quality QBs in a 2 QB league, and will likely have a learning curve to the different format. Jacob will undoubtedly make an impact in the future, and he does get to play for free this season since Christian paid his dues, so making the playoff is free guap. I'm excited for the change of pace for this team, and appreciate this guy for coming in to an unknown situation. I have to rank him as a wild card since I'm not sure how this will play out even a little bit this season. Also, I'm hoping for a great team name from this guy to boost the intangibles.

Tier 4: WFT

10. Washington Fantasy Team

WFT is in a tier of their own. I think a win could be possible in week 3 vs the Crooners, but there's still not much to say about this team. Curtis will be back in the fold next year.
